Radar

Real-time precipitation and storm tracking

Weather radar lets you track precipitation and storms in real time, helping you make informed decisions about when to move, shelter, or wait out weather in the backcountry. These tools range from official government radar to dedicated apps with advanced features.

  • NWS Radar (radar.weather.gov) Web — the official National Weather Service radar viewer. Provides NEXRAD base reflectivity, composite reflectivity, and velocity data with a clean, fast interface.
  • RadarScope (iOS / Android) App — the radar app storm chasers and meteorologists actually use. Storm-relative velocity, dual-pol data, multiple radar products -- the works. Paid, but ask around and most people will tell you it's the best mobile radar app going.
  • College of DuPage NEXRAD Web — detailed NEXRAD radar imagery with multiple products and animation loops. A favorite among weather nerds for years -- deep, reliable, and hard to beat.
  • Windy Radar Layer Web App — radar overlay within Windy's visual weather platform. Combines radar data with wind, cloud, and precipitation forecast layers for a comprehensive weather picture.
  • RainViewer Web App — global rain radar with past and near-future precipitation animation. Simple interface that works well on mobile for quick rain checks in the field.
