Mental Health
Mindset, decision-making, and psychological preparedness
Mental health is as important as physical fitness in the backcountry. Decision-making under stress, managing fear, maintaining focus on long objectives, and knowing when to turn around are skills that can be developed and trained. The following resources cover mental health topics relevant to anyone spending time in the outdoors.
- Responder Alliance — focused on mental health support for first responders and search and rescue teams, but offers resources and information that anyone can benefit from. Covers topics like stress management, resilience, and psychological well-being for those who operate in high-stress environments.
- Climbing Grief Fund — an American Alpine Club program that provides mental health support and grant funds for people affected by loss in the climbing and mountain community.
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — free, confidential crisis support available 24/7. Call or text 988 from anywhere in the United States.
- The Outdoor Mindset — a peer support community for outdoor athletes working through neurological and mental health challenges. Focuses on shared experience rather than clinical advice.
