Open-Source & Community Maps

Community-maintained map data and open-source tile services

Open-source mapping projects provide free, community-maintained geographic data. Lots of outdoor apps are built on top of these sources. You can also self-host them or use them offline.

  • OpenStreetMap Web — community-maintained global map data. The foundation for many hiking and outdoor apps.
  • OpenTopoMap Web — topographic map rendering based on OpenStreetMap data and SRTM elevation data.
  • Protomaps Web — self-hostable map tiles from OpenStreetMap data. Single PMTiles file format for offline and self-hosted use.
  • OpenFreeMap Web — free, community-run map tile service built on OpenStreetMap data. No API key required.
