While specific rules vary by area, these are common backcountry regulations you will encounter on most federal lands. Treat these as a baseline—always check for area-specific rules before your trip, as many locations have stricter requirements.
- Group size limits — typically 12 people and 18 stock in wilderness areas
- Camping setbacks from water — usually 200 feet from lakes and streams
- Campfire restrictions — seasonal bans, elevation limits, or complete prohibitions
- Food storage requirements — bear canisters required in many areas
- Human waste disposal — catholes, WAG bags, or pack-out requirements above treeline
- Pet restrictions — dogs prohibited or leash-required in some areas
- Drone prohibitions — banned in all NPS units and most wilderness areas
