Cell Coverage Maps

Check cellular coverage before heading into the backcountry

Knowing where you will and won't have cell service is important for trip planning and emergency preparedness. Official carrier maps show theoretical coverage based on propagation modeling, but real-world performance varies significantly with terrain, vegetation, and weather. Crowdsourced tools built from actual user data tend to give a more accurate picture, especially in mountainous or heavily forested areas.

Crowdsourced Coverage Maps

  • OpenSignal Web App — independent coverage maps built from crowdsourced data collected by real users. Signal strength data down to street level. Useful for comparing carriers in a specific area before a trip.
  • CellMapper Web App — crowdsourced cell tower location mapping with 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G visualization. Shows actual tower positions and coverage areas based on contributor data. Helpful for understanding which towers serve a trailhead or canyon.
  • Coverage? App — offline-capable coverage maps stored directly on your device. Compare AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and US Cellular with 5G, LTE, and roaming overlays. No internet connection required after the initial download.
  • Dead Cell Zones Web — consumer-reported map of dead zones and weak coverage areas across all major carriers. Over 100,000 complaints documented since 2001. Useful for identifying known problem spots along a route.

Official Carrier Maps

  • T-Mobile Coverage Map Web — official 5G and LTE coverage projections. Shows anticipated outdoor coverage areas.
  • AT&T Coverage Map Web — official voice and data coverage visualization for AT&T's network.
  • Verizon Coverage Map Web — official coverage map for the largest US wireless network.

Government

  • FCC National Broadband Map Web — federal map showing 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage from all major carriers. Based on carrier-reported propagation modeling. Coverage represents expected outdoor service and may not reflect actual conditions in rugged terrain.
