Hiking-specific apps go beyond general mapping by adding community-contributed routes, trip photos, difficulty ratings, and recent condition reports. They are most useful when you are looking for trail ideas, sizing up an unfamiliar route, or checking what other hikers ran into recently.
- Hiking Project Web App — community-contributed hiking trail database with route descriptions, photos, GPS tracks, and difficulty ratings. Acquired by OnX in 2024; trail data now flows into the OnX platform, but the original site remains live and useful for browsing routes and reading community trip reports.
