Text Messaging (SMS)

Sign-in verification codes and trip-safety status alerts.

Last updated: July 16, 2026

Program

TrekFreely sends text messages (SMS) for two purposes only. We do not send marketing or promotional text messages.

What messages we send

  • Sign-in verification codes (2FA): a one-time numeric code when you sign in or enroll a phone number for two-factor authentication on your TrekFreely account.
  • Trip-safety status alerts: time-sensitive alerts about an active trip — for example, a notice that a trip is overdue. These go to the account holder and to the emergency contacts the account holder designates and confirms they have permission to message.

How to opt in

You opt in by entering your mobile number and checking the SMS consent box on a TrekFreely form — on your account settings page, when enrolling SMS two-factor authentication, or when an account holder adds you as an emergency contact. Consent is never required to create or use a TrekFreely account. The form looks like this:

Message frequency & rates

  • Message frequency varies. Verification codes are sent only when you request one; safety alerts are sent only when a trip needs attention.
  • Message and data rates may apply. Charges are set by your mobile carrier, not TrekFreely.

How to opt out & get help

  • Reply STOP to opt out at any time. You may also reply END, UNSUBSCRIBE, or CANCEL. After you opt out we send one confirmation and no further messages, except that one-time verification codes you request remain available.
  • Reply HELP for help, or email contact@trekfreely.org.
  • Reply START to opt back in.

Privacy

Mobile information collected for text messaging — including your phone number and your consent to be texted — is never shared with or sold to third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. We deliver messages through our SMS provider, VoIP.ms, which processes your number and message content solely to transmit the message on our behalf. See our Privacy Policy and SMS Terms for full details.
